I just saw a really interesting piece done by the San Fransisco PBS affiliate on Disabled Gamers. I’ll embed the video below. I really wish I could find some solution for myself, there’s some really great games out that I just can’t play due to the bane of my gaming existence, trigger/shoulder buttons. Maybe I’ll seek help from the Electrical Engineering department at UW, perhaps someone there would be interested in such a project. The frustrating part is there’s an easy solution to many disabled gamer’s problem and that is for game devs to make it so you can remap the buttons completely to the user’s choosing. some games already do this, or go halfwa and provide bottom profiles, which doesn’t cut it. If I could map lesser used functions to buttons harder for me to push then I could play a lot more. Here’s the video.

So this week was the Electronic Entertainment Expo in Los Angeles. A personal goal of mine is to have a legitimate reason to go…. some day I hope! The biggest buzz was over the Nintendo Wii and the Sony PS3, while Microsoft showed off their “Live Anywhere” campaign dwelling mostly on software. Let’s break it down!

Everyone is saying how much of a risk Nintendo is taking with their non-orthodox controller and “blue ocean” strategy along with the odd name “Wii” for their console (Revolution was such a nice codename, couldn’t we had just kept that?). The thing is Nintendo is a very conservative company. They don’t take really too many gambles (virtual boy aside) and since everyone seems to be really accepting of their controller for the Wii, the risk is minimal. With their strong first party titles, all Nintendo is doing is printing money as far as I’m concerned. And the $250 price on the Wii is sweet, it won’t break the bank like the PS3.

Now here’s the thing, while people think Nintendo is taking the risk, in actuality Sony is. The PS3 will make or break Sony’s much touted Blu-Ray discs and Cell processor. Soy is banking so much on the PS3 to make these technologies standard, that they stand to have the most to loose financially if it flops. Now obviously the PS3 is gong to sell well in the gaming market, but will it succeed in making Blu-ray the standard or will it be UMD discs all over again? The $600 price tag hurts it for getting it under the tree for Christmas when the Wii is almost three times as cheap and the box360 most likely getting a slight price drop around that time. No doubt about it that the PS3 boasts the most power, but how much more life like can things get? and then there’s the software factor to figure in.

There weren’t too many surprises shown on the software side of things. We were kinda expecting teasers for the usual sequels. Let’s Break it down by what caught my eye…

On the Xbox side of things the Halo 3 trailer was awesome. Not much was revealed of course, but we do know the covenant has taken over most of earth only to discover forerunner technology buried under Africa.

Dead or alive Xtreme Beach Volley Ball 2 looked good and titillating as always.

On the Nintendo side of things Super Smash Bros Brawl looks killer, with online play and for the first time ever third party characters.

And finally Metal Gear Solid 4 and Final Fantasy XIII really stood out for the PS3.

That’s about everything worth showing a video for. The other big announcements were for world of Warcraft’s expansion the Burning Crusade. The Draeni were announced as alliance’s race. It’ll be interesting to see how this is worked into the storyline and how well the race will be integrated into the alliance.

So while I was on that mini vacation I had been having above average pain days. My aunt suggested I talk to my doctor about it, and so I did. I was able to get him to give me about 5 extra pain pills a month for those days that are high pain. I was told by my old pain doctor that they couldn’t do anything and that I was already taking the maximum allowed. I never really believed that as I had a friend who was taking a higher dose. So a big thanks to my aunt and my doctor for make high pan days a little more bearable.

I, as you can see, am a big online gamer. Particularly MMORPGs. So of course I play world of Warcraft. In most online RPGs I play the wizard or mage type class. Magical ranged damage is my favorite. Well my class is due for a review next patch and today they showed off the tweaks being made. I’m not entirely thrilled over the changes. I think I’m going to go a heavy frost build like this one. The new 10% critical strike debuff looks really cool, but I’m worried about frost immune mobs. Of course the same patch introduces a frost and shadow dungeon, most likely making my build useless forcing me to try an elementalist or fire build. I’m REALLY tired of having to deal with resists. The Hunter class is looking really alluring, but after all the time and items I’ve gotten on my mage re-rolling would be hard. E3 is this week so lots of gaming news to come!

I know I know, long time no post. Where to begin? In April my Dad’s sister and her family came up to visit. It was a good visit, they had a lot of fun. I babysat their kids one night while they caught a dinner show downtown. The visit culminated at an excursion to the San Juan islands. It was a kinda fun little excursion, but also frustrating. My Mom gets me to come to these family events by saying she’ll cook for me and we’ll do things together etc etc. But what ends up happening is I’m bored out of my mind while all she can think/do/talk about is picture taking. This wouldn’t be so bad if not, like all of Mom’s things she’s into, she’s either 10% gaga over it, or no interest at all. Then if you call her on it she’ll either A) Ignore you completely and cram more pictures down your throat or B) Declare she’ll never take pictures again and what was she thinking that she could be passionate about something. It’s obviously OK t be passionate about your interests, you just don’t need to breathe eat and sleep them.

In other news I had a small variety of computer issues that kept me from writing here. First Comcast, my ISP, decided to update their DNS servers and that screwed up our internet connection. I finally fixed it by doing a hard reset on our router. Next I got a new keyboard and mouse. The batteries in my old mouse weren’t lasting a whole day so I got a new one. My keyboard gets really dirty cause my hands sometimes leak from their bandages. I got a new roll up rubber keyboard which, as you can see by the amount of typos on this post, takes a lot of getting use to. You can wipe it clean with a damp cloth and it’s spill proof though, big pluses.

My Parents got back from their vacation a few days ago. I’m really glad they could go off for two weeks and not fret to much about me. They really had fun so I’m glad everything went as well as it could for them. Coincidentally enough, things went as well as they could for me too. Usually my parents are very involved in the major dressing changes This entails replacing all bandages on my body; a time consuming and relatively painful event. Since they were gone this left just Steve and myself to do it all. You know what? We did it! Even the nastiest spot on my body. Yes it was time consuming and painful, that can’t really be avoided; but we got it done. Just like everything I have to face, dreading it is usually worse than the actual event. Hopefully when this happens in the future, in the heat of the moment I can remember this…. hopefully.

Me, Vern, John, and Steve went to go see this the other night. I didn’t know exactly what to expect, and what I got was the best movie I’ve seen this year so far. It’s not action pact, but what action there is was great; however the movie’s story telling and deeper meaning were what made it so great. Based on the comic book of the same name, the movie starred V, a vigilante anarchist set out to right the wrongs of a socialist Britain. His inspiration is Guy Fawkes, a real historical figure who tried to blow up the House of Parliament in England 1605. Click the link for more information. While the Wachowski Bros. took some liberties with the original work, the movie adaptation remains faithful to principals and ideals of the comic book. Don’t let the fact its source material is a comic book scare you away either. All in all 4.5/5 stars!

Those names appear in a lot of my video games as swords/katanas named after real Japanese sword smiths that have become almost legend in today’s world.. I looked them up on Wikipedia and found this interesting story…

A legend tells of a test where Muramasa challenged his master, Masamune to see who could make a finer sword. They both worked and worked and eventually, when both swords were finished, they decided to test the results. The contest was for each to suspend the blades in a small creek with the cutting edge facing the current. Muramasa’s sword cut everything that passed its way; fish, leaves floating down the river, the very air which blew on it. Highly impressed with his pupil’s work, Masamune lowered his sword into the current and waited patiently. Not a leaf was cut, the fish swam right up to it, and the air hissed as it gently blew by the blade. After a while, Muramasa began to scoff at his master for his apparent lack of skill in his making of his sword. Smiling to himself, Masamune pulls up his sword, dries it, and sheathes it. All the while, Muramasa was heckling him for his sword’s inability to cut anything. A monk, who had been watching the whole ordeal, walked over and bowed low to the two sword masters. He then began to explain what he had seen.

“The first of the swords was by all accounts a fine sword, however it is a blood thirsty, evil blade as it doesn’t discriminate as to who or what it will cut. It may just as well be cutting down butterflies as severing heads. The second was by far the finer of the two, as it doesn’t needlessly cut that which is innocent and undeserving.”

While we’re on the subject why did Arrested Development get cancelled while the Simpsons is still living, albiet on life support? I really hope Showtime picks it u, however I do have to admit it ended pretty nicely. Tied up loose ends while leaving an opening for more.

My parents called today from their vacation, everything is going fine. I’m really glad they can do stuff like this now without worrying too much about me.

I’ve been messing with my Flicr account and have it set up to interface with this blog. It’s such a cool photo sharing website.I’m almost finished personalizing my new smart phone. More on that to come soon! I’m going to try to get the remaining sections of this site up, working on one every week or two.

is what I say after an eye problem when seeing a pretty girl; this is usually Maria. What a weekend. Our house was transformed in the 4th level of hell as I was n bed all weekend blind with an eye problem and Steve didn’t get hardly any sleep as he was coughing his lungs up with bronchitis. I felt bad for him having to take care of my blind gimp ass while he is sick also, but what can you do? I was suppose to go to the second part of the Microsoft Focus group today, but the crappy chain of events carried by the bad weekend prevented this. I’m still interested in this VOIP stuff and think Vonage might be the best fit.

My parents are leaving for a 2 week sailboat cruise around the US/British Virgin islands. Mom is of course hesitant about being gone that long with just Steve here to the my dressing changes. Dad booked time in a tanning salon prior while Mom laughed at him for doing so, we’ll see who has the last laugh. I’ve been decking out my new cellphone and I’ll have a review up shortly.

Interesting week. First off I finally got selected to a usability study at Microsoft. They call frequently but up until now I haven’t qualified. I love being on the MS campus. I don’t know why but being a nerd it feels like you’ve made it to have a legit reason to be on campus. Oh, and fuck 520, floating bridge and all, seriously. So the focus group was about Voice-Over Internet Protocol (VOIP) stuff. Using your standard telephone over your internet connection. Skype and Vonage are the big names out there and I’ve checked them out and the technology sounds pretty neat. The focus group leader showed us different hardware and asked what we liked and disliked about each. This study was special in that it was a two parter, with “homework.” We each randomly selected equipment to take home and try for one week. The leader of the focus group then comes to our house to watch us use it at home. Today she came by and watched as I setup this Linksys VOIP phone dealy. I couldn’t get the damn thing to work. It was a little weird hooking up a new gadget while a stranger takes notes on the process. Next week I’ll go back to the campus and tell them about the experience. The whole thing was pretty cool, and I hope I can partake in it again. The perks are nice too, my choice of 2 MS products, plus I get to keep the VOIP equipment. That’s all for now, I’ll do a review shortly on my new remote control for my home theater and my new cell phone.
